Repairing an Ancora "Pump filler"?, I'm stuck....
« il: Febbraio 16, 2020, 15:19:52 pm »
Dear fountain pen friends ,
I’ve obtained a nice Ancora fountain pen , equipped with a"‘pump filler”system.
The system Is  functionally similar to the Tibaldi  Iride filler.
Unfortunately the piston is leaking and needs an overhaul.
After careful examination I can’ t find a way to get the filler out.
So I don't know anything about the design of the filler
On the picture below you can see the pen and a sketch of how I see the system could be designed.
This is only an idea of mine, based on  the functional examination I’ve tried to perform.
I really hope some a you might be able to help me in getting the filler completely apart and to repair this nice pen.
Thanks in advance for you valued assistance8
Kind regards,
Francis

Thanks for your suggestions Ricardo , but although  the Ancora filler is also a "pump filler" the system  is completely different.
While i expected the system is somewhat as shown on may sketch, I thought one there should be a screwdriver slot in the top of the piston. So I've tried with a long screwdriver to enter the possible slot.
As far as I've experienced there was effectively a screw driver slot, but I did not succeed to unscrew the piston.
I then thought it could be left hand threading and tried screwing clockwise, but nothing budged...
Given this experience I fear the threads are secured with Loctite.....
Frustration... i don't know how to proceed further
Still hope an Ancora fan will chime in to get me out !
Kind regards,
Francis
BTW :Looking at the links you've send me ,I'm highly impressed reading on the  complex repairs you've executed !
Heads off Ricardo , you are a "master repairer" !

Hi Francis,
I have not experience with this Ancora filling system.
Threads fixed with Loctite Is a possibility but without a live inspection, I cannot write a clear answer.
If you want, send me the pen and I will try to restore it.

Hi Ricardo,
Thanks for your kind offer, but being obsessed  to find out how the system is designed I  prefer to do it myself .
And i have good news, i finally succeeded in getting the filler completely disassembled & repaired.
My initial thought the piston should be unscrewed from the filling knob using a screw driver through the barrel from the section side proved too be right.

Note however one should first unscrew the filling knob from the barrel before one can do so.

The screw driver slot in the top of the piston rod was rather un-deep, and consequently the screw driver easily slipped out of the slot.
But finally the piston rod unscrewed and after removing the piston housing enclosure screw I had to system completely disassembled
First thing I did was making the screw driver slot  in the top of the piston rod deeper.
The soft rubber piston cup seal axially slipped over its - too small - back top collar resulting in damage on the sealing lip , hence leakage.
I’ve replaced  the cup seal with a 5 x 1,5mm O ring and provided a larger back up ring at the back and at the front of the O Ring.
Filling is perfect ,and surprisingly the pen can hold  2,7ml of ink !
On the attached sketch and picture you can see how the system was designed an how I’ve repaired it
Note the small O-Ring Ancora provided on the piston rod just behind the front threads on the sketch (not yet installed on the picture, sorry ).
This was done to ensure the  threads can not be overtightened and will always unscrew easily,
It surely took me 8 hours in total to find out how  the system was designed and how I should get it open and repaired.
Next tom ask a friend MD to make an X ray scan, this would surely helped a lot !
I’m happy now, my frustrations are gone !
Kind regards,
Francis
BTW, I'm somewhat surprised there is not a single post on Ancora pens on your excellent site, how come ?

Hi Francis impressive work! I really charmed by your restore. I haven't see yet an Ancora pen like this so I never had the possibility to try a restore but I really Hope to have one in a next future to try the challenge.
Forum have the Ancora board but it's focused on vintage pens, modern are not common in Italy.
